Australian-owned by a subsidary of Channel Nine (hence the Channel Nine-like dots in the logo), and criticised by Kiwis for being ‘too Australian’ because of its style and its Aussie game-show fare, Prime began broadcasting in NZ in 1998.

Unfortunately presentation-wise it looks like the neglected offspring of Channel Nine, and pales compared to the presentation of the other major NZ channels.

One pretty cool thing is that it simulcasts Channel Nine’s live morning show ‘Today’ (but plays NZ ads in the ad breaks).

Having lost the ratings game when competing against the 6pm incumbants on ONE and TV3, Prime shifted its bulletin, broadcast from Sydney, to 5.30, and adopted the tagline ‘First at 5.30’.
